Trailer vs. Tent vs. RV at Burning Man: An Honest Comparison

A straight comparison of tent camping, renting a trailer and renting a motorhome for Burning Man — cost, comfort, logistics and the real tradeoffs.

We rent trailers, so take this with the appropriate grain of salt — but the honest answer is that a trailer is not right for everyone, and pretending otherwise wastes your money and our time. Here is how the three options actually compare.

Tent camping

Cheapest by a wide margin and the most connected to the event. It is also genuinely hard. Tents get 120-degree interiors by 9am, which means you are awake and cooked whether you slept or not. Dust gets into everything. There is no shower unless your camp has one, and no refrigeration unless you are running coolers and buying ice daily.

  • Best for: experienced burners, people on a tight budget, campers embedded in a theme camp with shared infrastructure
  • Worst for: light sleepers, anyone with a medical condition affected by heat, first-timers arriving alone

Renting a motorhome

Self-propelled, so no tow vehicle needed. The catch is that most consumer RV rental companies explicitly prohibit taking their vehicles to Burning Man, and the ones that allow it charge a large dust premium. People get around this by not disclosing, which voids the contract and leaves them personally liable for tens of thousands in cleaning and damage claims. It happens every year.

Renting a trailer

A trailer gives you the same climate control, bed, kitchen and shower as a motorhome, usually for less money, because you are not also renting an engine. The tradeoff is towing: you need a vehicle rated for it, or you pay for delivery and placement. Once it is parked, it does not move until the event is over, which is fine because you should not be driving inside the playa anyway.

  • Best for: couples and small crews who want to sleep well, first-timers who want a margin of safety, anyone staying the full week
  • Worst for: people who want to move camp, solo campers on a tight budget, anyone without a tow vehicle who does not want to pay for delivery

The cost reality

A trailer rental is not a small line item next to a ticket. The honest framing is that it converts a survival exercise into a week you can actually function through. Our trailer prices are on every trailer page with the deposits and fees listed next to them, because the number that matters is the all-in number, not the headline rate.
